Weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped 34,000 to 262,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the lowest level since April 2000.

The four-week average, a less volatile measure, dipped 1,250 to 283,750, near a 15-year low. Applications are a proxy for layoffs, so the sharp fall indicates that employers remain confident enough in the economy to hold onto their workers. The economy expanded just 0.2 percent at an annual rate in the January-March quarter, down from the 3.6 percent pace in the second half of last year. Fewer layoffs, however, suggests the growth slowdown may be temporary. If employers anticipated a longer-lasting slump, it is likely that job cuts and applications for unemployment benefits would rise.

"The trend in claims, below the pre-recession The Associated Press trough, continues to impress," Derek Lindsey, an analyst at BNP Paribas, said. It suggests that weak hiring in March "may have been a blip in an otherwise solid trend." The number of people receiving aid also fell, dropping 74,000 to 2.25 million. That is the fewest since December 2000. Most economists blame temporary factors, such as a West Coast port strike and harsh winter weather, for the first quarter's slow growth. Consumers cut back on spending and businesses sharply reduced their investment in new oil and gas drilling, in response to cheaper oil.

The strong dollar also weighed on exports and widened the trade gap, dragging down growth. Yet analysts expect that growth will rebound in the April-June quarter to about 2.5 percent. In addition, hiring was weak in March. Employers added just 126,000 jobs that month, the fewest in 15 months and snapping a yearlong streak of monthly gains above 200,000. The unemployment rate remained 5.5 percent.

Despite those stumbles, unemployment benefit applications are at rock bottom. For those with jobs, the chances of getting laid off are very low. Jean Nidetch, a New York in housewife who tackled her own obesity, then shared her guiding principles with others in meetings that became known as Weight Watchers, died Wednesday. She was 91. She died at her home at senior complex in Parkland, near Fort Lauderdale, her son David Nidetch said.

Plagued by her weight since childhood and carrying 214 pounds on her 5- foot-7 frame, Nidetch went to an obesity clinic sponsored by the New York City Board of Health in 1961 and began picking up tips that slowly seemed to work. No skipping meals. Fish five times a week. Two pieces of bread and two glasses of skim milk a day. More fruits and vegetables.

She took off 2 pounds the first week but disliked the way the clinic's leader imparted information and how little the obesity group's members shared. So she gathered six overweight friends in her Queens living room to share what she'd learned and talk about their own food compulsions. She found it a relief to share her struggle with others, and they did too. Nidetch reached her goal of 142 pounds on Oct. 30, 1962.

As the weekly meetings at her home grew to include dozens of people, two of them Felice and Al Lippert convinced Nidetch she had the makings of a business. Weight Watchers International was founded in 1963. By the following year, classes were being held across New York, with dozens of participants going on to lead sessions of their own. Franchises were opened, and by 1968, the company went public with adherents across the globe. Stocks drop as investors assess corporate earnings The Associated Press Market Watch NEW YORK Stocks logged their biggest drop two weeks on Thursday as investors assessed some disappointing earnings news.

Harman International, which makes audio systems for cars, and Yelp, an online listings company, were among the companies that fell sharply after posting weak earnings. The stock market has sagged this week after climbing to record levels Friday. While many investors remain optimistic that growth will resume later in the year, that belief isn't yet being backed up by stronger economic data or good corporate earnings reports. A surge in the dollar in the first three months of the year is hurting company earnings for those that sell overseas, and a plunge in oil prices that lasted into January is hurting the energy sector. "Until we see an improvement in earnings numbers investors are kind of caught," said Gina Martin Adams, an equity strategist at Wells Fargo Securities.

The Standard Poor's 500 index dropped 21.34 points, or 1 percent, 2,085.51. That was the biggest drop since April 17. The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 195.01 points, or 1.1 percent, to 17,840.52. The Nasdaq composite declined 82.22 points, or 1.6 percent, to 4,941.42. Overall corporate earnings have come in better than analysts were expecting, but they are still much weaker than they were at the end of last year.

Companies in the 500 are forecast to report average growth in earnings per share of just 0.6 percent for the first quarter, according to data from Capital IQ. That Thursday, April 30, 2015 Dow Jones industrials Dow Jones 17.840.52 Highlights NYSE 11,049.75 AMEX 2.485.23 NASDAQ 4,941.42 compares with a growth rate of 7.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014. Gains for stocks have slowed this year, as the market has entered the seventh year of a bull run. After Thursday's losses, the 500 index was up just 1.3 percent for the year and the Dow just 0.1 percent. The market is struggling to push higher as stock valuations have climbed.

The price-earnings ratio, a measure of how much investors are willing to pay for every $1 of earnings, is now just above 17. Three years ago it was 12.5. "We're treading water," said Ron Sanchez, chief investment officer at Fiduciary Trust Co. International. Sanchez says his expectations for returns are "much more modest" than at any time during the last three years.

Yelp was among the biggest losers Thursday. The stock plunged $11.89, or 23 percent, to $38.39 after it reported a loss of $1.3 million in its first quarter and gave a lower-than-expected revenue outlook late Wednesday..
