Tips, Variations, Storing Best Little Smokies Recipe

  • Sugar: You can swap out the sugar for grape, or apple jelly. Cranberry sauce is also a great substitute. Using a dark brown sugar will give it a hint of molasses flavor.
  • BBQ Sauce: You can trade out the BBQ sauce with Chili Sauce and if you use a sweet BBQ sauce you can use less to no sugar.
  • Sweet and Sour: Trade out your BBQ sauce with your favorite sweet and sour sauce

FAQs

Are co*cktail weiners and little smokies the same? ›

Little smokies: Famous things usually go by many names. You may know them as co*cktail wieners, co*cktail franks, lil smokies, or as my grandma says “baby wursts.” They're small smoked sausages sold in 12- to 14-ounce packages at the store, in the deli section.

How long should smokies be cooked? ›

Things You Should Know

For cooking sausage on a stovetop, heat a skillet with about 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of oil on medium heat. Add the sausages and cook for five minutes on each side. To boil sausages, cover and boil them for 10-15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 °F (74 °C).

How to cook Smokies on the stove? ›

Fill skillet with enough water to reach a quarter of the way up sides of sausages. Simmer, covered, until sausages are cooked through and water evaporates, 10 to 15 minutes. (If sausages have cooked through but water has not evaporated, uncover, and continue to cook until water evaporates.)

Can you cook Smokies in a frying pan? ›

Even if the casing does break a bit, high-quality smoked sausage is so juicy that it'll be hard to dry it out. If grilling is outside your cooking capacity, then pan-frying your smoked sausage on the stove will still yield a moist, crispy product in a very manageable way.

Are little smokies already fully cooked? ›

Yes! Like most smoked sausages, little smokies are already fully cooked. You'll want to heat them through before serving. We think the easiest way is to toss them in the slow cooker with a simple three-ingredient pantry sauce.

What is the best way to heat up little smokies? ›

Microwave Oven: Remove links from package and place in single layer in microwave-safe dish, add 1/2 cup water, and cover. Microwave on high (100% power) 3 links for 2-3/4minutes and 6 links for 3-1/2 minutes, or until hot. Let stand covered for 1 minute. you may need to adjust the time for your microwave.

How to cook pre cooked smokies? ›

The stovetop is another great option for cooking pre cooked sausages. Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Add a small amount of oil or butter and place the sausages in the pan. Cook for about 4-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are heated through and have a slightly browned exterior.

How to tell if little smokies are bad? ›

Strong or unpleasant odor: A strong or unsavory smell is the first sign your sausage has gone bad. If your sausage has a fish-like, acidic or sour smell, you'll likely want to throw it away.

Are little smokies just hot dogs? ›

Are little smokies the same as co*cktail sausages? Yes, they are the same. These mini sausages come pre cooked and are available at grocery stores in beef or pork.

How to cook Smokies without a BBQ? ›

Fill your skillet about halfway with water and heat it over medium flame until the water begins to steam (you want the water to get to about 150 degrees F, if you're the precise type). Once you see steam, add the hot dogs and allow them to steam as the water boils off completely.

Should I boil or fry Smokies? ›

Grilling and frying sausages can make the sausages pop with flavour. Boiling sausages is a faster method but you will have to part with some of the flavour unless you fry them after boiling them.

How long do little smokies last in fridge after cooking? ›

All sausages- except dry sausage - are perishable and therefore must be kept refrigerated or frozen. Uncooked fresh sausage can be stored in the refrigerator one to two days; after cooking, keep for three to four days refrigerated (40 °F or less).

Can you eat uncooked Smokies? ›

Simply put, fresh sausage is raw and uncooked, making it great as an ingredient, but you'll need to cook it yourself. Smoked sausage is fully cooked, so you can eat it as is. In other words, you don't need to cook smoked sausage for it to be safe for consumption, though you can if you prefer your sausage warmed up.

Can Smokies be cooked in the oven? ›

Baking them in the oven allows the bacon to crisp, the liquids to be released from the Smokies, and the brown sugar to caramelize on them deliciously. It also allows to you control the fat content of them a bit more easily, as most of the bacon drippings will remain on the sheet pan after cooking.
