What kind of band is Dirty Heads? ›

Since 2001, Dirty Heads have mixed hip-hop, reggae, and rock to create a unique sound that both fully embodies their Southern California roots and resonates with audiences around the globe.

The band was founded in 1996 by Jared "Dirty J" Watson and vocalist/guitarist Dustin "Duddy B" Bushnell in Orange County, CA, drawing inspiration from the area's reggae and ska culture. The two first met at a party during their first year of high school.

Formed in 2003 in Huntington Beach, CA, Dirty Heads released their debut album, Any Port In A Storm, in September of 2008, which features the RIAA certified gold track “Lay Me Down,” a song that spent eleven weeks at #1 on the Billboard alternative chart, more than any single that year by any other artist.

The group formed when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves.

The first half of Dirty Heads' Island Glow tour will feature Yelawolf as direct support –Lupe Fiasco is set to join as direct support in July. On select dates, they'll be joined by G. Love & Special Sauce, Little Stranger Tropidellic and Bikini Trill.

Rome co-wrote the song "Lay Me Down" with The Dirty Heads and has collaborated with the band on several albums including Sounds of Change, Dirty Heads, Dessert EP and Swim Team.

The band since we last spoke has added some honorary band members, and there are now four Dirty Heads kids in the picture. I caught up with Jared and Duddy on what it's like to be new fathers and how its changed the creative process in this exclusive interview.

Ramirez began performing with Gaugh and Wilson in 2009, where they played under the name "Sublime", until Nowell's estate issued a legal challenge to the use of the trademarked name for a venture not including Nowell. As a result, they changed their name to "Sublime with Rome" in January 2010.
