Learning To Sharpen

 • Quote

#1

Postby Craig C »

I have a couple of serrated Delicas; one was a gift and I bought the second because I liked the first so much. They're getting a bit dull, and since I'm considering buying a couple more knives (apparently this is not an uncommon phenomenon?) I'm thinking about buying the sharpening kit and learning to do it myself (something I have zero experience in).

How hard is it to learn to properly sharpen the serrated edges? I'd like get my old knives back in shape, and it may influence my future choices as well.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Craig.

The 204 only takes a few moments to learn how to use and it's the best system for putting an edge back on serrations (IMHO). There is no messing around with honing oil or setting angles. Also it can be used to sharpen pretty much anything, even things you didn't know needed sharpening.

I don't think there's going to be much arguing here Craig. The Sharpmaker is an excellent bit of kit - easy to use and it'll make your knives sharper than they've ever been. Wish I'd bought mine years ago.

Craig C,

Welcome to the forum!

The Spyderco Sharpmaker can get your serrated Delicas as sharp or even sharper than when you got them. Lansky also makes a pocket sharpener just for serrated Spyderco knives that you may also enjoy.

Can't add much Craig, just get a 204 and enjoy sharpening everything in the house. It's therapeutic too. Usually good deals on Ebay.....of course. Or look to Mike at New Graham.

The only thing you may want to think about is buy a set of the diamond rods with a 204.For really dull knives it would cut the sharpening time way down.

The Sharpmaker is simply amazing. It is the only knife related purchase I have made that my better half approves of. She can't believe how how sharp the kitchen knives are these days. I found an old dull Sabatier serrated knife if a drawer yesterday that I plan to try on the sharpmaker this afternoon.

Sounds pretty unanimous. The Sharpmaker is the kit I was looking at, I was mostly concerned about how much more difficult it might be to correctly sharpen the serrated edge as opposed to a plain edge.

pvr4, I hear ya, sharpening herself's kitchen knives is probably reason enough to invest...

Thanks all.

Hi Craig
The Sharpmaker handles serrated edges really well. They're really no harder to sharpen with this system than a plain edge. The instruction book and video tells you all you need to know. Go ahead and get yourself one - you won't regret it.

do I need to say it too? :D

I love my 204, it's only used around here for serrations(every 3-4 months d/p on use). I keep them sharp enough, but you might want to invest in diamond rods or SiC sandpaper and alligator clips.

I have no problem to make a shaving edge to my SE Delica with the 204. I admit I had to practice a bit, though... Sharpening PE's was a matter of minutes to learn, but for the serrations, it took a few weeks (guess others may cope with this sooner)

Ditto and amen. Your arm hair will flee in terror at the sight of the 204.

I just starting using my 204 and I must admit that I can't quite get used to sharpening my SpyderEdge knives. It always seems like I'll end up with a PlainEdge.

It does do one **** of a job getting things sharp though.
